The General Electric (GE) C44-9W, or "Dash 9," is a powerful 4,400-horsepower diesel-electric locomotive introduced in 1993 for heavy freight service, known for its wide-nose safety cab and reliable performance, including its GE 7FDL-16 engine and Hi-Adhesion trucks. Popular with North American railroads like BNSF, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific, it was replaced in production by the GE GEVO-powered ES44DC and ES44AC models due to new environmental regulations.

First produced in 1993, it was a successor to GE's Dash 8 series. It was the most powerful locomotive in GE's Dash 9 series at its introduction. Stringent EPA emissions regulations led to its replacement by the GE GEVO-powered ES44DC and ES44AC locomotives in 2005. Many still operate today, with some units being rebuilt into new configurations or AC-traction locomotives to extend their service life.

.Featured a special truck design for improved traction and better grip on the rails, which contributed to a longer service life. Utilized a split cooling system to reduce engine temperatures and fuel consumption.
