The E9 is a 2,400-horsepower diesel-electric passenger locomotive built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors between 1954 and 1964. It is the final model in the "E-unit" series of classic, streamlined passenger trains.

E9s were produced in two versions: the cab-equipped A-unit and the cab-less booster B-unit. A-units were typically paired with one or more B-units to provide additional power for a train.

Each E9 unit has two 1,200-horsepower, 12-cylinder 567C diesel engines. Each engine drives a generator, which produces electricity to power two traction motors.

The E9 is nearly identical to its predecessor, the E8. The primary visual difference on the E9A is a slightly different, more flush-fitting headlight glass, though this is not a reliable way to tell them apart. E9s powered many famous American passenger trains during the 1950s and 1960s, including Union Pacific's "City" fleet and Burlington's "Zephyr" fleet.

The E9 marked the end of EMD's classic streamlined passenger locomotive series. Its production coincided with the decline in U.S. passenger rail travel, which limited its sales compared to earlier E-unit models.

After passenger rail declined, some E9s were used for freight service. Amtrak also acquired a number of these locomotives in the 1970s. Many surviving E9s have been preserved by museums and heritage railroads, and some are still used today for special excursions.
