Union Pacific uses specialized "maintenance of way" (MOW) trains to maintain its 32,000-mile rail network, which include various types of specialized rolling stock like tool cars, cranes, ditchers, snowplows, and side-dump cars. These trains are comprised of dedicated locomotives and numerous pieces of equipment to replace ties, rails, and other track components, perform ballast and grade work, and clear snow and vegetation. The older MOW equipment often utilizes repurposed or older rolling stock from former railroads, with some cars bearing their original predecessor names. Tool and camp cars were outfitted for crew facilities, including bathrooms, cooking, and eating areas, providing self-sufficiency for long work periods.

Union Pacific painted its MOW equipment silver (or aluminum) from the mid-1950s until the early 1970s. This replaced the battleship gray that had been used for about 20 years prior.
