The EMD E8 is a diesel-electric passenger train locomotive produced by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors between 1949 and 1954. Known for its 2,250 horsepower output and "bulldog nose" styling, the E8 was a popular and reliable passenger locomotive used by many major railroads and became a mainstay for Amtrak in its early years.

Each E8 unit featured two 12-cylinder 567B diesel engines, with each engine producing 1,125 horsepower for a total of 2,250 horsepower. Each engine powered its own generator to drive the traction motors. The locomotive rode on A1A-A1A trucks, meaning the two outer axles of each three-axle truck were powered while the middle axle was an unpowered idler. This configuration was intended to be easier on the track, particularly on high-speed passenger routes.

The E8 was built in both cab-equipped "A" units and cabless "B" units. A total of 450 A-units and 46 B-units were constructed.

The E8 included several enhancements over its predecessor, the E7, such as upgraded D27 traction motors, more reliable AC motor-driven applications, and optional dynamic braking. These improvements made the E8 significantly more reliable and easier to maintain.

Along with the E7 and E9, the E8 was nicknamed the "bulldog nose" for its less-slanted, more prominent nose profile compared to earlier E-units. It is also distinguishable by its stainless-steel filter grille running along the top length of the carbody and four evenly-spaced porthole windows.

The E8 was widely used throughout the 1950s and 1960s to pull high-profile passenger trains across the United States. Major buyers included the Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central, and Union Pacific.

While most have been retired, a number of E8s have been preserved in museums and on tourist railroads, remaining a symbol of the classic streamliner era.
