Overview

The SD45T-2 was developed to address unique operational concerns on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Numerous tunnels and snow sheds in the High Sierra were causing operational problems for their locomotives, especially accumulation of exhaust gases and excessive heat, commonly resulting in severe overheating or shut down. After extensive testing, Southern Pacific solved this problem by moving the radiator intakes to just above the running boards, creating what we now refer to as a 'tunnel motor'.
