Brass Guide Grading Standards

We know how hard it can be to buy something without being able to see and touch it. This is why, for years, BrassTrains.com has led the industry in terms of high-resolution, top-notch photos that show off what we have for sale.

We're now happy to announce that we're adding a new feature: The "Brass Guide Grading Standards."

The grading details for each model can be found on the detail page. Simply look for the "Grading Tab" under the the photos of the model to select this option (see below)

How does the Grading System work?

The selected score for each category will be highlighted in yellow. In cases where a model scores in multiple sections, the lower point value will be selected. This method allows us to fully describe the overall condition of a model, including how it looks, how it runs, and how it has been stored up to now.

The grade is broken down into 3 categories:

(1) Appearance (0 - 50 possible points): The model is scored based on cosmetic condition: paint quality, any chips, dents, loose parts, etc.

(2) Mechanical / Electrical (0 - 40 possible points): The model is graded based on how well it runs: smoothness, lights, DCC functions, etc.

(3) Box & Foam (0 - 10 possible points): The box and foam that accompany the model are graded based on condition.

The highest possible score is 100, which would show as a '10.0' grade. Using '10' as a 'perfect' score allows us to truly show the condition of any given model. The closer a model scores to '10.0,' the better overall condition it's in. The lower the score, the lower the overall quality of the model.

Together with the photos provided, the 'Grading' sheet should answer just about every question about a model.

It's important to note that this grade refers specifically the actual condition of the model being sold. It does not relate to decided pricing on a model, which may vary depending on a lot of factors not shown on the sheet, including model rarity, provenance, quality of paint work, etc.
