The Southern Railway PS-4 was a 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive, known for its distinctive green and gold paint scheme, built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1923 and 1928. These locomotives hauled the Southern Railway's premier passenger trains, including the Crescent Limited, achieving speeds of up to 80 mph. Based on the USRA Heavy Pacific design, they featured 73-inch drivers and had a large capacity tender capable of holding 16 tons of coal and 14,000 gallons of water. The single remaining PS-4, No. 1401, is preserved at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Constructed in three batches between 1923 and 1928. Based on the heavier of the two USRA (United States Railroad Administration) Heavy Pacific designs, but with modifications like smaller drivers and a shorter boiler. Produced 45,535 lbs of tractive effort.

Famous for its distinctive green and gold paint scheme, which set them apart from the more common black locomotives.

Designed to haul the Southern Railway's premier passenger trains over hilly terrain between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Georgia, and other main lines. Hauled trains such as the Crescent Limited and the Piedmont Limited. Capable of pulling 14-car trains at speeds up to 80 mph.

The only surviving PS-4 is No. 1401, which is now a static display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Symbolized the Southern Railway's focus on passenger service and represented a high point in American steam locomotive design for passenger traffic.
