The McGiffert loader was a steam-powered, self-propelled logging machine invented by John R. McGiffert around the turn of the 20th century and manufactured by Clyde Iron Works in Duluth, MN. It was designed to load logs onto railroad cars, featuring a unique design that allowed it to straddle the tracks, raising its wheels to let empty cars pass underneath. With a crew of nine, it could load up to 350,000 board feet of logs daily and was used extensively in pine forests from the early 1900s until production ceased around 1930.

The machine sat on legs on either side of the railroad tracks, with its wheels tucked up between the legs. Empty log cars were then pushed under the loader and moved through the machine. A boom extended from one side of the loader, using cables and tongs to lift logs and place them on the car. When the area was cleared, the wheels were lowered, and the machine could propel itself to a new location using a chain-driven axle.

A steam engine powered the entire machine (prototype), including the lifting mechanism and the drive system. This unique feature allowed the loader to move itself along the tracks without relying on a separate locomotive. The steam boiler and spool drums were mounted on an elevated platform over the tracks. The ability to load logs from both sides of the track and load an entire train of cars was a significant advantage over other methods.

The McGiffert loader became one of the most successful and recognizable pieces of logging equipment of its era. Nearly a thousand were produced and used across the United States, especially in the vast pine forests of the Upper Midwest and the Intermountain West. It represented a major step forward in the efficiency of logging operations, making it easier and faster to transport logs from the woods to market.
