SOME INTERESTING HISTORY:

Baldwin built three 2-8-8-8-2 locos for ERIE between 1914 and 1916. This one (#5014) was named "Matt H. Shay." These rarely made a max speed of 10 MPH. ERIE later scrapped their triplexes. None have been preserved.

The purpose of the Triplex was for banking heavy trains over steep inclines, which requires high tractive effort, but low speed, over short distances. With all 6 cylinders operating at full pressure, huge amount of TE could be produced.
